El Drago Milenario
Icod de Los Vinos is a wine-growing town on the north coast of the island, famous for its wineyards. Naturally, over time, progress and tall buildings have arrived even here.

But despite this, the ancient drago tree has stood here not only as a symbol of Icod but - along with El Teide and the basilica at Candelaria – as an insignia of Tenerife as a whole Botanists still doubt the age of this gigantic tree. Until relatively recently, it was taken as proven that this giant was around 3,000 years old. According to more recent investigations, that is now more of a tour guide´s story, the tree is a maximum of 500 to 600 years old. In actual fact it isn´t a tree, but a plant belonging to the iris family. Nevertheless, it is certain in any case that the drago tree at Icod de los Vinos is the oldest drago in the islands.
